What is Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader is reading management software used here a St. Joseph School to help focus attention on
careful reading of books and accelerate reading growth, which in turn improves students’ critical-thinking skills and
builds the intrinsic love of reading.
How does it work?
Students read a book, and then come to school and take a test about it.
What books can a student read?
There are over 100,000 Accelerated Reader tests that available to our students on our school computers, which means
that there are over 100,000 books to choose from. We have many of these books in our school library, and they are designated
with a green dot on the spine and an Accelerated Reading Label on the inside. The Aurora Public Library also has a copy of
our Accelerated Reader List if you check out books from them.
If the student would like to
read a book that is Accelerated Reader but they did not get the book from our St. Joseph School library, the book must be
approved by our librarian Mrs. Stoll and the student’s teacher before credit will be given.
What does the information on the Accelerated Reader Label mean?
The Accelerated
Reader Label on a book tells:
Reading Level – Each book has been given a grade level, and students are asked
to read books within one grade level up and one grade level down of their grade.
Example:
A student is in 2nd grade- They can read books from the 1.0 through 3.9 level.
Test Number – Students use this number to access the test in the computer.
Number of Points – Each book is assigned a point value which students receive
all or a fraction of after completing the test.
Example:
If a book is worth 2 points and all questions are answered correctly, the student receives credit for 2 points. If a student
answers some of the questions wrong, they will receive a corresponding lower point total for the book.
What
kind of questions is on a test?
Questions are multiple choice; each question shows four possible answers, and students “click”
on the answer they think is correct. There are anywhere from 5 questions and up on a test (the higher the point value of the
book, the more questions on a test)
How many points does my child need in a quarter?
The
chart for each grade and quarter is listed on the attached sheet.
When can we start reading and taking tests?
